Salmon Rivers

Mild climate of the southern Kola Peninsula seaside and rivers abound with salmon make the area the world's best place
for fishing Atlantic salmon.
The perch, pike, roach, whitefish, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, brook trout, loach, lake char, burbot are common in
thousands of lakes and rivers of Murmansk region.
Fishing is allowed free everywhere, excluding the rivers (with their transitional lakes) inhabited with Atlantic salmon,
as well as fishing ground, fish reserves, and fish farms.
Licence fishing of Atlantic salmon is allowed from June, 15 till September, 15. More than 1500 foreign tourists from
38 countries visit the Kola Peninsula every year to fish salmon using the method called "nakhlyst" (flyfishing).
Rivers in the southern and central parts are long with a small stream gradient.
The rivers of the northern coast are shother. They have waterfalls and rapids.
The rivers have big and strong salmon weighing from 8 to 12 kg.
Varzuga, Ponoy, Umba, and Olenitsa rivers have become the most famous for the flyfishing. Varzuga is the
richest in fish among the rivers of the Kola Peninsula.
The Umba is one of the most interesting rivers of the Kola Peninsula. Here one can enjoy fishing in wilderness
in an ecologically clean area. The river is famous for its big salmon and one can get there without using a helicopter.
The Atlantic salmon is spinned or caught by the method
of "flyfishing" with artificial flies as baits.
The Ponoy River is a beautiful winding river rich in Anlantic salmon. There are also lot of ducks
on its banks; muskrats are common in this area.
The water system of the Kola Peninsula is a paradise for a fisherman.
