
Leningrad region (Leningradskaya Oblast') is situated in the northwest of Russia.
The region borders on Novgorod and Pskov regions in the south,
Estonia in the west, Finland in the northwest, the Republic of Karelia in the
north, and Vologda region in the east. The region is washed by the Gulf of Finland,
the Baltic Sea. The biggest European lake is in Leningrad region.
It is Lake Ladoga. The area of the region is 85,9 thousand square kilometers.
The total population is 1763 thousand people (according to the data of 01.10.2002).
Leningrad region is an interesting combination of wild forests and highly developed and industrialized territories.
Though Saint-Petersburg is a separate subject of the Russian federation, geographically it is located in the center of Leningrad region.
